You guys know that I’ve been seriously longing to travel lately. I decided that I would take a interesting spin on that desire and become a tourist in my own city – or rather, let you be a tourist through my eyes! I partnered up with StickerApp to share their fabulous stickers and figured that one of the coolest ways to show them off would be if I went around plastering them to random objects near some of my favorite RVA spots! StickerApp offers hundreds of pre-made, colorful stickers that are perfect for decorating notebooks, cars, planners, and more. They also give you the option to customize your own! Just as I shared how Ziggit sent me new pins when my name changed, StickerApp was generous enough to do the same, plus they sent stickers with my boyfriend’s video production logo as well! B and I had such a fun time running around and compiling our favorite spots and then totally sticker-bombing them! See my list of where you must go if you visit RVA, below!
This has got to be my favorite French restaurant of all time. If you visit during the dinner hours, you’ll even have the chance to purchase a bouquet of flowers from a stand that sets up shop right outside their doors. (P.S. Make sure to try their hot chocolate – it’s other-worldly!)
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is home to some of the most stunning art masterpieces from around the world. A few years back, I had the opportunity to see their Hollywood costume exhibit which had everything from Marilyn Monroe’s iconic dress from “The Seven Year Itch” to the fierce, yellow pleather jumpsuit worn in Kill Bill to the full Batman garb from “The Dark Knight.” It was a fantastic experience, and if you don’t feel like paying for an exhibit, no worries – the museum itself is free to the public and is filled from top to bottom with more incredible pieces of art than I can count!
Do you like ice cream? Of course you do (if you don’t, you should just walk away now because I’m not sure we can be friends – kidding! Sorta). This is the best Italian gelato you have ever tasted…times ten! I don’t even play when I say that you will want to try every flavor in the shop. My #1 choice is always “Just Ask”: a white chocolate gelato packed with Oreos and chunks of peanut butter. Now you don’t have to ask, because you know, and I’m telling you that you have to at least just try this flavor. You won’t regret it!
Yes, I know this is a chain of restaurants, but I have to say I’m pretty partial to the location we have in Carytown (on the outskirts of downtown RVA). From the eclectic decor to the freaking fantastic pizza, you’re seriously in for a treat. Gluten free? That’s okay! I will be the first to admit that I actually enjoy their gluten free crust even more than the original – especially on their “Mighty Meaty” pizza!
Move over Central Park, this should be one of the top parks in the US because it’s just that beautiful. Maymont is composed of several sections and is spread over 100 acres. In the mood for a tour of an 1800’s estate with carriage houses and gazebos? Maybe you’d rather see a full Japanese garden, complete with a full bamboo forest and waterfall. If you’re feeling more romantic, take a jaunt over to the Italian gardens (this is one of the top wedding spots in RVA) and enjoy a stroll through the flowers, and architecture that makes you long for Europe. Maymont has so much to offer – oh! I forgot to mention the petting zoo. Yep, after gardens and mansions, you can go pet a goat or see a bobcat just for fun!
6. Rocket Fizz
Another Carytown stop, this candy shop is far more than what it appears from the exterior. You’re greeted by a pirate statue upon walking in, and then immediately smacked in the face with the overwhelming scent of delicious sweet treats! Sample a piece of taffy from their massive collection of flavors or even purchase a ranch dressing-flavored soda. The possibilities are endless! This is my favorite pre-movie stop. The perfect place to stock up on novelty candies without having to pay an arm and a leg for them!
Macarons the size of your entire hand. Need I say more? This is one of the first places I bring my friends when they visit Richmond, or if they’re just in dire need of a dynamite latte. Not only does the bakery provide the happiest treats, but their drinks and sandwiches are to die for. The atmosphere is made for bloggers – or really anyone who appreciates aesthetically pleasing decor that allows for the perfect Instagram shot.
8. The Daily
I don’t know about you, but for me, finding a good place to enjoy a cocktail with a friend or grab brunch after church on Sunday is totally essential. The Daily is an upscale restaurant in the heart of Carytown with a menu that suits nearly any diet and a bar stocked full of the finest spirits. My go-to is their acai-blueberry martini if I’m there strictly for drinks, but for brunch it’s the huevos rancheros with a passionfruit mimosa. Mmmm, I’m getting hungry just thinking about it! Sit outside on their patio for a really enjoyable people-watching experience *wink wink*.
Just a hop, skip, and a jump from Whisk, this overlook provides one of the most scenic views of downtown Richmond. If you’re able to visit during sunset, you’ll watch as the sunbeams reflect off the top of the buildings and the lights slowly illuminate the streets, providing a dreamy glow across the entire city.
10. The Byrd Theatre
Built in the 1920’s, the Byrd Theatre brings the most stunning version of history to the city in the form of $2 movie nights and the best dang move theater popcorn you’ve ever tasted. This theater only shows two movies per week and the times are always 7:15 and 9:30pm. Be prepared for lines around the block, especially on the weekends when the “Mighty Wurlitzer” (a one-man organ show) performs before the movie. I will prepare you in advance for quite uncomfortable seats – a Richmond joke – but the most magical movie experience of all time.
11. Quirk Hotel
If you’re looking for an all-encompassing hotel, this one was made for you! Quirk has the prettiest clean, pink aesthetic that made this blogger totally swoon during the first visit. You’re met by smiling faces the second you walk in, and while you’re waiting for your room to be ready, you can sit down for a delicious cup of coffee, or head over to their art gallery to see the latest installation. If you’re not quite ready to venture too far from where you’re staying on that first night, head up to their rooftop bar for great drinks and a view that totally can’t be beat!
I have been a faithful customer at this cafe since the year I graduated high school. This particular cafe is practically a second home to me, and truly, it’s that for a lot of people. There’s such a homey vibe throughout the entire place, with Pac-Man machines as tables, newspapers and flowers everywhere you look, a cozy book nook with a giant armchair to curl up in, and the yummiest ultimate grilled cheese sandwich known to man. Come for a chai latte, stay for the live music, and by the end of your visit, you’ll be best friends with the owner’s mom.
I hope you’ve enjoyed my mini tour through RVA thanks to StickerApp (save 20% off on your entire purchase with my code “SheSawStyle20“). I definitely had trouble narrowing down this list, as I’ve lived here my entire life and have too many favorite spots for just one post. Maybe I should do this again? Anyone else visited or want to visit Richmond? Feel free to reach out and I will be more than happy to be your guide! If you’re a native, where are some of your favorite spots in the city? I’m always looking for new places to explore!
