Peachy Keen: What’s Up With Bell Sleeves

Peachy Keen: What's Up With Bell Sleeves

Truly, what’s up with bell sleeves?  When they made their debut is debatable.  Some say it started with Japanese kimonos, others assume the medieval 1500’s are to blame, while others still associate it purely with the carefree 1970’s and those festival-going flower children.  While I like to believe bell sleeves have come a long way since then, Bustle affectionately titles them “the bellbottoms of the arms.”  These sleeves have been trending for quite some time, but I’m not sure they have ever been as popular as they are now (save the early 00’s thanks to the likes of Kelly Clarkson and Britney Spears).

What I love the most about bell sleeves is that they’re one detail that flatters literally any body type.  No one could ever look bad wearing them, and they don’t highlight any “unsightly” body parts – unless you have something against elbows 😂 They’re spunky and flirty and add life to an outfit.  If you manage to find a top that has a higher bell sleeve like mine (closer to the elbow than the wrist), you won’t even need to worry about them falling into your food while you eat.  Major win!  WhoWhatWear covered this trend in summer of 2016, saying the style would return the following year, and they weren’t wrong!  Bell sleeves are in full force this spring, and I don’t believe they’re going anywhere!

If you’re ready to hop on board this totally fun trend train, take a peek at some of the bell sleeve pieces I’ve rounded up for you below.  These gorgeous tops are perfect for date nights, brunch with the girls, shopping excursions, movies with the kids, or whatever you have planned.  The price points are all over, from only $12 to $88, so you won’t be spending more than you need to on a cute and quality item! “The bellbottoms of the arms.” I’m sorry, I find that absolutely hilarious. It really is such a bizarre, but beautiful trend. Adds such an effortless look to your silhouette and you’re totally right! It looks good on everyone! Love how you incorporated a bunch of different options with their prices, as well.

I love your selection of bell sleeve tops! Especially the one you’re wearing, so pretty with the pink stripes.

There is something really fun and carefree about wearing them, I agree. Plus I tend to recommend them for women who don’t feel as comfortable in a figure hugging top, because they tend to emphasise other areas. I love some of your selections above. Just added you on bloglovin so I can keep up.

I’m loving the stripes x bell sleeves! I feel like a lot of bell sleeve tops shouldn’t be worn too casually, but this one I could see you wearing for any occasion. Casual yet elegant 🙂

In some weird way I wish bell sleeves would make it to our (guys) wardrobe as well as they’re really flattering and especially those that won’t even drop into your bowl of ramen, haha. And they do come in all shapes, colors and fits so it’s really a versatile piece!

I’m really loving this trend too!! And you’re so right about the long sleeve ones falling in food…I may have had that happen a lot the last few months, haha! They’re so pretty tho! I think I need to get more shorter or 3/4 ones though with how clumsy I am! Love your picks and the one you’re wearing!

  16. April 14, 2017 / 1:50 PM

Bell sleeves are definitely the cutest trend to exist and it DOES flatter everyone! It’s so funny because bell bottoms was a huge thing of the past and my mom always tells me “I used to wear that”! I’ve actually STILL have not hopped on this trend and I’m kicking myself everytime I see it but I love your picks!! I’m making it a point to get at least 1 for the Spring!!

    With love, Jenn
