Top Tips For Appearing Taller

*Disclaimer: I, in no way, believe that being taller is better than being short, nor do I find that any body type is superior to another.  I am a huge advocate for body positivity, and strive to create a comfortable atmosphere for everyone in my corner of the blogosphere.  The only reason I put this post together is because I frequently see comments like “legs for days” or “you look sooo tall” and want to share my tips and tricks for achieving the look through fashion and photography.  I believe that fashion is an expression of yourself and how you wear your clothing can radiate confidence, so let’s assume that “taller” – in this instance – is about how you feel on the inside as well as how you appear externally.

In all honesty, I am not short.  I stand at 5’6″ now, and grew incredibly quickly as a child, becoming the tallest in my friend group by the age of 10 (and staying that way to this day).  I wouldn’t say that 5’6″ is “tall” per se, but my legs are long, as is my torso and neck, giving me the appearance of someone much longer.  I also tend to wear clothing that emphasizes this silhouette.  I’ve found a few fashion tricks that really seem to extend my length in person and in photos.  I have also discovered that camera angles can work wonders on the height of an individual.  I take photos for my #bloggerbestie, Stefanie, who is perfectly petite, and she frequently notes how tall she appears when she looks back through her camera roll after our shoots.  Coming from below always makes a person magically stretched in photos – especially if you take pictures with an iPhone!  (You can actually see the difference in these photos.  Some were taken straight-on and some were taken from below.  Can you tell which were which?)

Along with photographing from different angles, there are fashion tricks you can use to alter the appearance of your height.  One of my favorites is simply to extend your middle.  I do this by wearing a cropped sweater with high-waisted pants and OTK boots in this look.  Without the boots, I looked much shorter, but the thigh-high style of the boots added length to the center of my body.  You can also lengthen your lower half by wearing a shorter skirt or shorts and rocking some heeled shoes.  I especially love a good mini skirt and heeled booties in the autumn and winter months.  You can see an example of that here!  Obviously, not everyone loves wearing heels, so you can also opt for platform sneakers or even some mules to create the illusion of longer legs.

My last trick – not shown in this set of photos – is wearing my hair in an up-do with long earrings.  This adds length to my neck and I always find myself walking with my chin higher in the air!  I very rarely wear my hair up, but lately I’ve been finding that a curled ponytail with some fun statement earrings is a great way to 1) rock second day hair and 2) bring a casual flirtiness to my outfit that otherwise wouldn’t have been there!  These are just a few of my tips for appearing a little taller.  If you’ve found a way to fake your height with fashion, let me know!

This look is THE BOMB! <3 As I'm not really the heels type of girl (you know, my back problems and stuff) I just tend to wear over-the-knee socks and they do their magic 😉

These are all great ideas! At 5’8″ I don’t need to worry about it too much, but I still see how I can show off my tallness with these ideas. And they are great for my friends that I tower over lol.
