Oh, how I love wearing clothes that appear as if they’ve been made from picnic blankets.
I mean, that’s basically what gingham pieces look like, right? But don’t get me wrong, I love wearing picnic blankets as skirts – or dresses – or bikinis – or literally anything else. Gingham is one of my favorite prints, and it’s the epitome of summer cheer. I used to think that it could only be donned in a casual fashion. However, after much research (and endless hours spent online shopping), I’ve found a way to master gingham for summer workwear as well!
There are two keys to styling a more quirky pattern as workwear:
- Find structured, properly-fitting pieces in that print. Think slim-fitting business pants, pencil skirts, and button-up blouses. You may also consider other typical “workwear” options – but with a patterned twist!
- Pair the patterned article of clothing with more elegant items. For example, I paired my gingham pencil skirt with a ruffled blouse and heels. I dressed everything up, creating the illusion of a chic ensemble from head to toe.

The colors you wear also determine how formal you appear. My gingham skirt is yellow. However, I decided not to wear red or orange or any other vibrant colors with the skirt, but rather, wore neutrals and clean whites. If I wanted to take a more casual approach, I may have worn a graphic tee with the “Breakfast Club” cast on it, some baby pink high-top Converse, and a denim jacket with hoop earrings. Wow that entire outfit sounds like a case of the 90’s, but what can I say? 😂
Here are a couple other gingham workwear outfit ideas:
Fuchsia and white
Navy and red
Peach, white, and black
Nude and blush
Yellow and blue
