TGIF! You’ve made it to Friday. Which means, of course, that it’s time for my Friday Five!

I’ll be honest, I’m writing this while curled up on the couch, dealing with a horrid gastroparesis flare-up. My stomach is in so much pain, and I have an event in two hours that I’m not sure I’ll get to. My to-do list was incredibly long today, and I’m only checking off two or three of the things that were initially on it. In fact, I didn’t even know if I’d get to this post today, because when I’m going through this kind of pain, it’s hard to focus on anything else.

Now, I don’t say any of this because I’m seeking attention – or even sympathy. I say it because I’m admitting that life is a little more complicated than what I choose to portray on social media sometimes. This means that sometimes I choose to rest off my discomfort rather than attend an event or meeting. Or sometimes it means attending the event or meeting rather than writing a new post. I have to pick and choose when my schedule gets a little messed up by my health. But I’m learning to give myself grace (and I talk about this a bit more in the post).

Friday Five Vol. 8

Big Spring Sales //

Shopbop is having their spring sale! 20% off orders under $500 and 25% off orders over $500. With discounts to key, high-quality items, this is an event you won’t want to miss. Find my favorite items here.

15% off everything at Express is where it’s at! They’ve got a ton of adorable items for the spring and summer season. Check out my picks here.

You can’t forget that Nordstrom is offering up to 50% off their spring apparel. I’ve rounded up the pieces on my wishlist and put them all here.

Gastroparesis //

I’ve been a little more vocal lately about my chronic illness. Maybe it’s just the frequent flare-ups that have been occurring lately, but it has me wanting to speak up more often. I know there are so many people fighting invisible illnesses like my own. Of course, I don’t want anyone to feel alone in their battle.

I also know that while sometimes I find “magic cures” that help for a short period of time – usually there will come a moment when that luck wears off and things get really hard again. The past few weeks have been that hard time of dealing with extra pain on a daily basis. I’m trying to find ways to keep on my busy schedule and also allow time to rest and recover.

I’m aware that this is an illness I will most likely deal with for the rest of my life, and that sucks. But I’m also giving myself grace to take it easy when things get too overwhelming for me to handle.

Getting Outside //

The weather is getting warmer – and sunnier – and while I could do without the infinite number of wasps that seem to be swarming in RVA, I’m enjoying going out and about more often. I’ve mentioned them once and I’ll continue to mention them time and again, but Perk! is my favorite spot of all time to go grab a cold brew and sit in the sunshine.

Bravo Rocco is located in my favorite mall in Richmond, and there’s tons of outdoor seating, although you may as well sit inside and listen to the dreamy music, since they keep their doors open when it’s warm out! Grab an iced latte with sweet Italian cream for a true treat!

It had been ages since I went to Lamplighter for my favorite iced chai in all of … the world. I finally went with my husband, and downed my drink in no time. Their back patio is such a fun place to relax.

The Graduate rooftop is finally opened (as of today, when this post goes live). Time to sip frosé from the highest rooftop bar in Richmond, and watch the sun set against the James River. SO DREAMY.

Let’s Get Real About Affiliates & #ADs //

Okay, ya’ll, time to get real. As a full-time blogger, I obviously gotta keep that cash flow coming in. It may not seem like a huge deal to support me (and other content creators) by using their affiliate links to purchase items, but those few cents we gain in commission from your purchases really do help like crazy! It’s nothing extra coming out of your pocket, but it means that we can continue providing excellent content for you to view!

And when you see a post on Instagram that starts with #ad, don’t keep on scrolling. Stop for a minute and read what they have to say. I specifically only work with brands I can support 100%, so being able to partner with a company and be paid to promote their product/services/etc. is a dream come true. The last thing I want you to do is skip by what I have to say about them.

Likes mean more than you know. As content creators, we don’t try to beg for your likes because we need an ego-boost, we just know that engagement counts for a lot when it comes time to collaborate with a new brand. I’ve put a ton of focus into my blog, since I do own it. However, brands typically look at social media numbers before anything else, and I always hope to show them that I’ll do a grand job promoting them!

I Just Want to Play My Music //

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve given an update on my top music picks. I’m so excited to announce the release of MAX‘s new single “Love Me Less.” As a member of his street team, it’s been so fun to push this song on the radio and share it with everyone I know. It’s also a total bop!

The Jonas Brothers dropped another total hit in the form of “Cool.” Talk about the perfect summer anthem!

I’m all about Logic‘s new album, “Supermarket.” His song “Lemon Drop” is by far my favorite. The entire soundtrack is so unique and strays from his typical sound. It’s a lot of fun!

I’ve been waiting for Khalid to release a full album. I was not disappointed when he announced “Free Spirit.” It’s the best middle-of-the-afternoon, windows open, coffee-in-hand kinda music.

Need some serious encouragement in the form of a song? You should definitely listen to Riley Clemmons new single “Fighting For Me.”

I have heard about gastroparesis, so sorry that you are in pain, it is rough. Have you tried acupuncture, I know it is isn’t a solve for all but it has helped many different ailments.

I know you’re not seeking sympathy, but I just wanted to say I’m sorry to hear about your recent flare-ups. I also deal with invisible illnesses, and they are awful, but it’s amazing to see the kind of support that others give you when you open up about it. I have so many people calling me brave, inspirational, etc and it’s so strange, but sometimes exactly what I need when I can’t do anything but lie down and think about how much my body frustrates me. Plus, the mere act of talking about it can help ease some of the stress that comes with these things. I hope you continue to be vocal about your struggles, as long as it helps you through the rough times.

I really enjoy these type of posts. First, I’m so sorry about your flare-up. Not only is it painful, but I’m sure the stress and pressure of needing to get things done aren’t easy either. This weekend I hope to get some pictures down and then family is coming into town! No shopping for me sadly haha.

The part about your chronic illness really resonated with me as someone who also has one. I know so many others suffer from these invisible illnesses but it’s true, it can feel so very lonely at times and it helps when others speak up about theirs and their struggles. I’ve enjoyed my longest “good” period the last couple months with only the most minor flare-ups here and there but the last week, my sharp pains, nausea, and headaches have been coming back pretty strong so it’s been a bit discouraging. But you’re right, it’s something we’ll most likely have the rest of our life and we need to give ourselves grace during these rough patches allowing us to rest and not push ourselves so hard.

Thank you for opening up about your experience with chronic illness. My mom has rheumatoid arthritis which, I’m sure you know, is also a chronic autoimmune disease and I know from watching her go through her everyday life that it’s not easy. Kudos to you for handling it with such grace and good on you for going easy on yourself!
