So, let’s talk about the gym. I can feel the groans coming from behind your computer and phone screens. Why does the gym get such a bad rap? I know that I personally had a nasty taste in my mouth when it came to gyms for most of my life. Maybe it had something to do with the lunks in the corner, grunting while they lifted weights and showed off their bodybuilder physique. Possibly it was the strange stares when I didn’t quite know how to operate a certain machine. It also could’ve been the fact that I wasn’t comfortable with my body, so I felt ashamed even being in a place of fitness.
Gyms can be daunting, but that doesn’t mean you need to avoid them forever. Of course, if you’re more comfortable working out in a quiet atmosphere at home or being one with nature in a park, I’m certainly not going to stop you. This is why many people have opted out of the idea of attending a public gym and just setting one up at home, for their own personal use. I still very much enjoy pulling out my yoga mat for an evening session every once in a while. However, the gym has become a place of sheer bliss for me now. I know that at the end of a stressful day, I can go and sweat out all my struggles, and then end the night with a relaxing dip in the jacuzzi or with a fun group class. A lot of this has to do with the gym I go to, but also hugely to do with my outlook.
When I first started going to a gym in high school, I was incredibly self-conscious of what others might think about me. I felt like the entire room would be staring at me during a yoga class, and what if I ran into someone I knew while I was sweating buckets on the elliptical? What I began to realize recently is that none of those things truly apply in the way I thought they did. When I’m at the gym, I’m working on myself, getting healthy and feeling confident with my body. My sweat is the result of my effort; and so what if I’m not quite energized enough to keep up with a boxing circuit or I don’t have the best abs at the pool? That doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be there refining my skills and bettering myself! There’s no reason to dread the gym – it’s a place where confidence should grow, not diminish!
One of the things I do before heading to the gym, is make sure I’m wearing super cute activewear, like this set from Adore Me. It might sound shallow (and it quite possibly is ?), but when I look cute, I feel better, and less self-aware when I’m working out. I also drink plenty of water so I’m not panting like a lap dog. Last, but not least, I give myself a boost of motivation with positive, upbeat music or self-love quotes! Then I get my booty over to the gym and make those exercises my bitzz!
